1. Read to your kids from early on. It is necessary that as a parent or guardian, you immediately set the example for an appreciation of reading. When your child notices you constantly reading to him, and he constantly hears all the great stories found in books, he will naturally associate reading as something fun and wondrous. As soon as your child is old enough, do not hesitate to explain what the illustrations in picture books mean and introduce him to different stories all the time. This simple activity is more than enough for creative juices to start to develop in your kid’s minds!
2. When running errands with your children, such as shopping trips to the grocery store or the market, make sure to read out loud various grocery ads as well as sales flyers. Grocery ads are a very helpful reference to start with because these signs are made to be simple, and they usually come with graphics, giving your child different clues as to what the object may be. Parents can helpfully help out with any difficult words to their child and assist him as he slowly tries to read it. It is a fun way for younger kids to learn about different letters and sounds in a new setting besides home and school.
3. Ask your to read out loud his favorite stories and try recording him- children really get a thrill out of seeing or hearing themselves doing things. You can use their excitement as a tool for learning and record your child reading using a camcorder or a cassette recorder.
